About the Calculator

Risk Medical Solutions has developed a risk calculator that evaluates individual risk for sight threatening retinopathy and recommends appropriate screening intervals. The solution delivers an individualized risk analysis for each patient that gives an appropriate screening interval according to the patients’ clinical state and risk profile. Our tests have shown that by applying this personalized medicine approach overall screening visits may be reduced substantially without increasing patients’ risk.
The mathematical algorithm uses established risk factors known to affect the progression of diabetic retinopathy, such as duration of diabetes, gender, blood glucose levels and HB1Ac.

Both healthcare professionals and individuals can use the risk calculator. It works well as a guiding tool for diabetic patients as it shows each risk factors impact on the DR progression. It has added value for doctors and other healthcare professionals as it can be used as a decision support tool. Our solution is adaptable to different medical, social and economical needs in different parts of the world. It can be implemented independently or with existing medical records or screening systems.

It is important to note, the calculator does not only lengthen the screening interval but also recommends shorter intervals than 1 year. The range is from 6 months to 60 months. Our tests showed that not only did the results cause no added risk for patients but it also reduced the number of people detected with sight threatening retinopathy within the given time period by an average of 36%.
